چکیده

Atmospheric mid-latitude circulation is dominated by a zonal, westerly flow. Such a flow is 8 generally symmetric, but it can be occasionally broken up by blocking anticyclones. The subsequent 9 asymmetric flow can persist for several days. In this paper, we apply new mathematical tools based 10 on the computation of an extremal index in order to reexamine the dynamical mechanisms responsible 11 for the transitions between zonal and blocked flows. We discard the claim that mid-latitude circulation 12 features two distinct stable equilibria or chaotic regimes, in favor of a simpler mechanism that is well 13 understood in dynamical systems theory: we identify the blocked flow as an unstable fixed point (or saddle 14 point) of a single basin chaotic attractor, dominated by the westerlies regime. We also analyze the North 15 Atlantic Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation atmospheric indices, whose behavior is often associated 16 with the transition between the two circulation regimes, and investigate analogies and differences with 17 the bidimensional blocking indices. We find that the Arctic Oscillation index, which can be thought as 18 a proxy for a hemispheric average of the Tibaldi-Molteni blocking index, keeps track of the presence of 19 Davide Faranda LSCE, CEA Saclay l’Orme des Merisiers, CNRS UMR 8212 CEA-CNRS-UVSQ, 91191 Gif-sur-Yvette, France Tel.: +33-169081142 Fax: +33-169087716 E-mail: [email protected] Giacomo Masato Department of Meteorology/NCAS, University of Reading, Reading, UK Nicholas R. Transitions between blocked and zonal flows in a rotating annulus with topography

The mid-latitude atmosphere is dominated by westerly, nearly zonal flow. Occasionally, this flow is deflected poleward by blocking anticyclones that persist for 10 days or longer. Experiments in a rotating annulus used radial pumping to generate a zonal jet under the action of the Coriolis force. In the presence of two symmetric ridges at the bottom of the annulus, the resulting flows were near...

The atmospheric general circulation: Some unresolved issues

Several questions concerning the general circulation for which satisfactory answers are not yet available are discussed. The focus is on the zonal mean heat balance, since problems in our understanding of this balance are a fundamental limitation on our ability to model climate and climate change. The questions are: How strong is the atmosphere’s poleward heat transport? What are the relative r...

What Makes an Annular Mode ‘‘Annular’’?

Annular patterns with a high degree of zonal symmetry play a prominent role in the natural variability of the atmospheric circulation and its response to external forcing. But despite their apparent importance for understanding climate variability, the processes that give rise to their marked zonally symmetric components remain largely unclear. Here the authors use simple stochastic models in c...

Vertical structure of anthropogenic zonal-mean atmospheric circulation change

[1] The atmospheric circulation changes predicted by climate models are often described using sea level pressure, which generally shows a strengthening of the mid-latitude westerlies. Recent observed variability is dominated by the Northern Annular Mode (NAM) which is equivalent barotropic, so that wind variations of the same sign are seen at all levels. However, in model predictions of the res...

Physical and Mathematical Properties of a Quasi-Geostrophic Model of Intermediate Complexity of the Mid-Latitudes Atmospheric Circulation

A quasi-geostrophic intermediate complexity model is considered, providing a schematic representation of the baroclinic conversion processes which characterize the physics of the mid-latitudes atmospheric circulation. The model is relaxed towards a given latitudinal temperature profile, which acts as baroclinic forcing, controlled by a parameter TE determining the forced equator-topole temperat...
